Other relatives born in the same year as Michael Mudry :
Helen Kelhart, a cousin to both the Bartko and Kudrick children is born to John and Helen Scšur Kelhart.  The mother is Anna Scšur Kudrick's sister.  Baby Helen is born on September 13, 1910 and is the 8th Kelhart child.  However, she is the first Kelhart child born in Hellertown, Pennsylvania with the first seven Kelhart children being born in Hazleton.

John Crans is born on July 14, 1910.  John will marry Mary Lazar, a cousin to the Bartko and Kudrick children, in 1936.  Mary Lazar is the child of Alex Kudrick's  sister, Anna, who resides in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.  After their marriage, John and Mary Crans will become close friends with members of the Mudry and Kudrick families.

Michael Kudrik Jr., cousin to the Kudrick children, is born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to Michael Kudrik Sr. and his wife Mary.  Michael Kudrik Sr. is Alex Kudrick's younger brother though they spell their surname differently.

While Michael spends his time sleeping, news continues:
The Kis-Lyn home for wayward boys, also known as an industrial school, opens in the valley north of Cranberry.  The facility, located in Butler Valley, services many boys over half a century and remains open until 1965.

Construction of the Friedlander Building, year 2000 home of the Standard Speaker newspaper offices at 21-23 North Wyoming Street, is completed.  The newspaper comic strip in the local paper and the dime novel are very popular.  Fred Fearnot and Frank Merriwell are two of the heroes who spring from the pages.  A popular ad in the local paper states, "Life holds many big days--the day a man marries and the day he buys an automobile."  One of the popular automobiles, the Arrow, adopts a new name and becomes the Pierce Arrow while local interest in automobiles further increases with the organizing of the Hazleton Motor Club.

Typhoid is the third most prevalent cause of death in Cranberry and surrounding local areas.

Father's Day is celebrated for the first time in Spokane, Washington, however I don't remember any celebrations for Alex Kudrick, along this line, while I was growing-up.

Seventy percent of all bread eaten locally is baked at home and the Kudrick household is no exception.  Baba Kudrick is an excellent baker and cook.

The song, "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" is a popular hit along with the immortal "Plant a Watermelon on My Grave and Let the Juice Soak Through."

In football, Harvard and Yale are the premier teams in the nation while the "flying wedge" is outlawed because of the numerous injuries caused by its usage.  In baseball, President Taft is the first president to throw out the opening-day ball at a major league baseball game.  The House of David baseball team is organized in 1911.  Thirty-some years later, they visit the Cranberry Ball Park and play  a night game using a portable lighting system.

Dances are held at Hazle Park Pavilion, shown above, every Wednesday and Saturday evenings.  The pavilion, which accommodates hundreds of dancers at one time, plays host to name bands of the day.  Both Mary Bartko, age 18, and John Bartko, age 16, are occasionally found at the dance pavilion especially on Saturday evenings.  John serves as a chaperone for his older sister Mary per instructions from their mother, Anna Scšur Kudrick, who is a strict disciplinarian when it comes to her children.

Other news occurring during the year of Michael's birth:
The Kudrick residence, after Anna Scšur II marries and moves out, includes ten family members and two boarders.  The boarders are from the Austria-Hungary Empire in Europe and are identified as Joseph Fedzula, age 38, and 21-year-old Michael Nahy.

John Koneyak, age 5, lives with his parents, John and Mary Koneyak, at 862 Locust Street in Hazleton.  Young John will marry Elizabeth Kudrick, Michael's half-aunt, in 1924.

The population of Hazleton is 24,754.  West Hazleton has 4,715 residents of which the three block area constituting West Cranberry Avenue has 69.  Alex and his family will move to West Cranberry Avenue in 1916.  The patch towns of Cranberry, Crystal Ridge, Harwood, Hollars Hill and Humboldt each have between 400 and 500 residents at this time.

Bituminous (soft) coal and coke replace anthracite coal as the nation's industrial fuel.  This fact will have adverse affects on the anthracite (hard) coal industry  in the future.

The period between 1910 and 1919 are happy times in the Cranberry patch town.  Economic times are booming and everyone has money including the Kudrick family.  Immigrant families worked in the mines and shirt factories and saved money to invest in their dream homes.  This robust economy will last until the stock market crashes in 1939.

Haley's Comet brings out many local curiosity seekers, but some miners refuse to go underground and work on May 18, 1910.  A rampant rumor at the local mines is that the earth is going to pass through the comet's fiery tail (true) and kill any miner working underground (rumor).  This is the prevailing superstition among Alex and his fellow Cranberry Mine workers so they stage a one-day strike to avoid the mines.

The old Markle Bank Building (shown in the center of picture above) is located on the same site where the 12-story new Markle bank building will be completed in 1912.  The building  to the left of the Markle bank is the old Pardee (a local coal baron) company store.  Its  location is on the southwest corner of South Wyoming and Broad streets in Hazleton.
